  • What is direct primary care?
DPC is a primary care model that removes insurance and bureaucracy from the patient/provider relationship. The patient pays a flat monthly rate for care, eliminating the hassle and cost associated with insurance. This drastically reduces overhead and allows the provider to have a much smaller panel of patients increasing both quality and access of care for the patient.
  • Why is the DPC model spreading so quickly?
The current fee-for-service model is confusing, expensive and incredibly frustrating. DPC is everything the traditional model is not. Costs are affordable, transparent and communicated upfront, care is personal, not rushed, and most importantly no longer incentivized by insurance reimbursement. This is what really changes things, care just feels easier, more natural and accessible without insurance getting in the way. Try us out and you'll know why DPC is spreading so quickly.
  • If I have insurance, why would I pay for a DPC membership?
It may not seem obvious at first glance, but a DPC membership saves you money. The overwhelming majority of patients never reach their deductibles, so they end up paying almost all of their health care costs out of their own pocket. For a monthly membership similar to the cost of your cell phone, which is likely a small fraction of your deductible, a DPC can handle the overwhelming majority of your medical care. For every emergency room visit we prevent, we save our patients the equivalent of 2-5 years of monthly payments. AND the care is far more accessible and personal than you are used to receiving.
  • Can I watch a video explaining what DPC is?
    Sure! Check it out.
  • How is Mainely Primary Care different than other practices?
Beyond the benefits of being a DPC practice, Mainely Primary Care believes that the industry is still learning just how beneficial integrating virtual care can be into a practice. By offering a hybrid of virtual and in-person visits, care is more accessible, convenient and easier for the patient while reducing risk of exposure associated with visits to a clinic. But of course, in-person exams are often necessary and we offer flexible in person hours. The point is, along with the relaxed, personal care found in all DPC practices, Mainely Primary care strives to increase convenience and access for our patients.
  • How much does membership cost?
First off, costs are clear and transparent. You will NEVER have a surprise bill. For a monthly payment similar to your phone bill you get unlimited access to your provider. We have plans for individuals, couples and families. You can see our entire cost structure here.
  • How do I enroll?
By filling out this form. After you submit we will contact you to set up a free consultation to answer any questions and enroll you if Mainely Primary care is a good fit for you.
  • What is included in a membership?
Minimal wait for appointments(usually same or next day). Unrushed visits. Personalized care. Extremely discounted imaging and prescription drug costs. Unprecedented access by text, phone and email with your provider and much more! See a full list of covered services here.
  • What if I am not satisfied with my membership?
We care about your experience as a member and if you are unsatisfied at any time please let us know. We are always looking for ways to improve and welcome feedback that is both critical and positive.
  • Can I cancel my membership?
Yes, you may cancel for any reason. We ask that you give us 30 days notice to prepare your records and finalize any open documentation. To defend against abuse of the membership model, we ask for an initial membership commitment of 3 months and a re-enrollment fee of $250 if you reactivate your membership after cancelling. (exceptions made on case by case basis)
  • What is your policy on controlled substances?
We believe controlled substances have a limited role in primary care and prescribe them rarely and sparingly. If you have chronic pain requiring narcotics we believe that is best managed by a pain management specialist. We rarely treat anxiety with benzodiazepines, but if prescribed will be done in extremely limited fashion. No controlled substances are kept in the office.
  • Do I need insurance to become a member?
No, insurance is not required to become a member of our practice. A membership to Mainely Primary Care will provide the primary care services outlined here. Our service pairs best with a high deductible insurance plan for emergencies and major medical procedures. Combining a DPC membership with a high deductible plan typically saves the patient money and results in more accessible, quality care.
  • Do you accept insurance?
No we do not, but if you have insurance you can still use it for prescription medications, hospitalizations, specialist visits and other major medical expenses. Insurance was never meant to cover your maintenance health care and by moving to a membership based model, care is no longer incentivized by insurance reimbursement but instead is focused on the patient's well-being and the provider's incentive to keep his/her patients healthy. As it should be.
  • What if I have Medicare?
You will need to sign a waiver declaring neither you nor your provider at Mainely Primary Care will submit for reimbursement from Medicare. However, even though Medicare will not cover your DPC membership, your Medicare will remain unchanged and intact for services you receive outside of our practice including specialty visits, lab testing, imaging, hospitalizations and prescription medications.
  • I have commercial insurance, can you refer me to an in-network specialist?
Yes. A referral made by your Mainely Primary Care provider can be made to your in-network specialist and accepted by your insurance just like a traditional practice.
